The King of Opening, as he is known in Kollywood, has lived up to his name yet again. In fact, Thala Ajith beat Superstar Rajinikanth and made Tamil cinema history on Tuesday. His film Vedalam released for Diwali on November 10 worldwide. One of the most highly anticipated films this year, the movie is directed by Siruthai Siva and has music by Anirudh.
The movie is reported to have had stupendous opening on Day 1 in Tamil Nadu. According to various reports, Vedalam is said to have made between Rs 14.5-16 crore in Tamil Nadu alone at the box office. This makes the movie the highest all-time opener ever in Tamil Nadu as a non-solo release.
What makes this fact more interesting is that Vedalam has achieved this feat when another big film—Kamal Haasan's Thoongavanam— also released at the same time. The two films had to share the big screens across theatres in the state. Both the films were Diwali releases and special early morning shows (4 am) were allowed by the state government for them.
Ajith's Vedalam is a total mass commercial entertainer and had all the elements that his fans like— songs, dance, fight, punch lines and family sentiment. The movie has turned out to be another blockbuster for the actor.
The last few films of Ajith have made around Rs 11 crores on an average on day one of its release in Tamil Nadu.
Here's a look at the day one box office collections of his previous three films:
Yennai Arindhaal - Rs 11 crore
Billa 2 - Rs 11-11.5 crore
Arrambam - Rs 11.75-12.25 crore
